The Next Generation of Growth
Sponsored by Schwab Institutional

David Welling

Most successful investment advisory firms achieve their first phase of growth through the efforts of the founding partners. Sustainable growth, however, requires expanding a firm's staff and capabilities beyond its current structure. This transition can prove challenging for firms as they shift the firm's organization around critical business functions, as well as hire and train new employees that maintain the culture of the firm. Through practical examples, this session examines how many of the industry's leading firms have overcome some of these challenges. Topics include: marketing and business development - engaging the entire firm in new client development including proactive ways to generate more referrals; human capital - best practices for recruiting and retaining talent; plus new research on attracting the next generation of advisers to this profession.

The Global Economy: How Did We Get Here and Where Are We Going
Sponsored by Principal Funds

Robert F. Baur, PhD

CFP Board CE credit: 1.0 (pending approval)
House prices are currently accelerating downward, a massive credit crunch is limiting loan availability and making credit expensive, consumer sentiment in the U.S. is the lowest in probably a generation and a recession is lurking on the sidelines or perhaps already in the game. How did the global economy evolve from what was the greatest global boom of all time to one with weak economic growth in developed countries and yet soaring commodity and food prices? We'll discuss the origins of the current economic environment and the forces that brought us $135 oil, a U.S. housing crisis, a global credit crunch and rampant inflation in emerging market countries. We'll conclude with an outlook for the U.S. and global economy and some comments about investments in general. The audience may be better able to react appropriately to changing economic events with a complete understanding of what shaped the current economic environment.
