How To Live in a World of Black Swans |
Nassim Nicholas Taleb, PhD |
| A scholar in the study of chance events, Nassim Nicholas Taleb is the author of The New York Times bestseller The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable. A "black swan" is a highly improbable event with three principal characteristics: it is unpredictable; it carries a massive impact; and, after the fact, we concoct an explanation that makes it appear less random, and more predictable, than it was. The astonishing success of Google was a black swan; so was 9/11. For Taleb, black swans underlie almost everything about our world, from the rise of religions to events in our own personal lives.
Taleb is currently co-director of the Decision Science Laboratory and visiting professor at the London Business School. He held, among other positions, that of Dean's Professor in the Sciences of Uncertainty at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and taught derivatives modeling at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University. |

Election 2008: Issues and Answers |
David Gergen, LLB |
| As the 2008 Election approaches, many questions remain unanswered regarding the future of the country, and the candidates need to have answers. How will the U.S. succeed in forging democracy throughout the Middle East? What, if any, is the exit strategy for Iraq? How will the U.S. deal with nuclear proliferation in the Far East? Where is the country headed on Social Security, health care, education, energy and the environment, jobs, deficits, taxes and the Supreme Court? How will voters react? David Gergen, an adviser to presidents of both parties and a leading commentator for more than two decades, sets his sights on the political landscape, helping audiences understand how shifting loyalties and new priorities will alter the current political scene, the 2008 Election, and the future of the country.
